Try ripping the MAPINFOs for PVR files. I found a couple of things around there.

CollectorSoul 12/04/2012 19h57

I am confused about the HUMANS.AFS in Shenmue 1:

I extracted it and opened the first pkf/s file in free quest editor and it displayed the same subtitles like a file from the FREE01.AFS

Are the free quest subtitles saved in FREE01 AND in HUMANS or are the subtitles in HUMANS only pointers to the right file in FREE01?

In Shentrads translation guide for Shenmue 2 they translated just in the HUMANS.AFS but in Hiei-'s Shenmue 1 guide it is said it should be ignored.
I am not sure about this now ...

Do I really need to ignore them?

IlDucci 12/04/2012 20h04

Shenmue I and Shenmue II totally use different methods for subtitling the HUMANS.

Shenmue II takes the subs from HUMANS files, with a couple of exceptions.

Shenmue I takes the subs from the FREEXX .SRF files, but if these are pretty much fucked up (Per example, if you regenerate the FREEXX.IDX without using a template), the subs are read from HUMANS, even if the game has no voices.

So if you don't mess the FREEXX, you don't need to edit the HUMANS on the game. But, of course, if we're talking about the Japanese voices, maybe the japanese HUMANS is needed so the voices doesn't mix together...

CollectorSoul 13/04/2012 19h51

Thank you so much IlDucci, especially the part with IDX creator and the templates! I managed to mod the japanese subs of Ine-san and it was displayed correctly.

The guide will soon be completed, the only thing that remains for now is the vending machine stuff but I and Wude from Shenmue Dojo are working on it. I hope somebody can release it on the Shentrad homepage because there is no Shenmue 1 section at all and I think this would be the right place for it.

By the way, do you guys know about other differences between Shenmue NTSC-J and Shenmue PAL (except text)? For me it seems like its just the speech and the vending machine that is different in J. I don't see any other differences...

IlDucci 13/04/2012 20h31

I hope you found the vending machines stuff. I don't know that much the Japanese version of Shenmue I; I only knew of lines untranslated, the vending machine (There's a couple of trademarks that supported the game in Japan but backed off on the West, such as Coca-Cola), and the ingame maps of Dobuita, Sakuragaoka and Amihama; which have some differences in the layout.

You should check if there's more companies on the game's credits that left on the western version.

Oh, and I'm eager to see this info/tutorial. You're welcome.

CollectorSoul 18/04/2012 16h53

Hello guys,

1) Thanks to Wude from the Dojo I (partially) found out about this vending machine stuff. I found out how to modd the selection screen, the drinking animation, the machine in Sakuragaoka and the machines in Dobuita. I tested all machines with all drinks and it looks good. I did not find you (yet) where the files for the other vending machines are stored. Does anybody of you know which files I have to swap?

2) There is a Shenhua intro scene in Shenmue 1. It appears if you don't touch any buttons on the main screen for some minutes. In my test build it was Japanese but it had no subtitles. It is possible that the subs are not existing and I wanted to ask if somebody knows more about this Shenhua files (Which are the audio AFS containers? Are there subtitles?).

3) Who should I contact about putting the guide to the Shentrad Page? Hiei- mentionned Shendream but it seems like he has not been online for a while. Sizious is mentionned on the page but he was not responding to my mails for some time (last thing he mentionned is having trouble with this internet or maybe I'm on some blacklist?). I would like them to release it in the missing Shenmue 1 section to fill this gap.

IlDucci 18/04/2012 17h13

1) If you mean Amihama, check out the MXXX folders on SCENE/02 and SCENE/03.

2) The subs DO exist, it's just that they are blanked out, both in English and in Japanese. The file is A0100.AFS/IDX. If you want to add the subs, the last version of the Cinematics Editor allows to edit the blanked out subs.

CollectorSoul 18/04/2012 20h25

1) OK I found the remaining Amihama files after some investigation :)
2) Thank you so much again Ducci! I searched for exactly this file. I'll see what I can find out and add it to my guide.

EDIT: OK I downloaded scinsube_21 and opened the extracted folder of A0100 and there was only the following:

0 SINF

Did I forget anything?

Hmm, Can you rip the audio file that's inside A0100? You should use the ADPCM Streaming Toolkit located in the ShenmueSubs kit. If the whole speech is on that file, then we have a problem (That can be solved). The English version had 10 subtitles, one per line.

CollectorSoul 19/04/2012 21h11

Hello again,

I extracted the AFS container and got this SRF file (subtitles) and I got 10 STR files (voices). I would say these are the 10 lines you are talking about.

I opened this SRF file now in a Hex editor and it says about this:
.....SINF.................
.....SINF.................
.....SINF.................
.....SINF.................
.....SINF.................
.....SINF.................
.....SINF.................
.....SINF.................
.....SINF.................
.....SINF.................

So it seems like the 10 subtitles are really existing but maybe empty.
Do I need to edit it with another method? Maybe with a hex editor?

No, you should be able to edit those 10 empty subs with the Cinematics Editor, as usual.

CollectorSoul 20/04/2012 19h25

Hi again,

I found out what it was. The sole 0 SINF line only appears in the japanese AFS container. The european shows normally the 10 lines. They really are editable so you were right. I will try to somehow macgyver the japanese and european files together and test if the subs are displayed.

IlDucci 20/04/2012 19h51

Tough. The lines are muted and the next line sounds inmediately. This requires to dump the japanese audio, then making a new audio for the Europe version. I have experience creating new .STRs, send me via PM the japanese file.

There's also Plan B: Check out the FACE AFS files inside Disc 4, and hope those are sliced and diced or single-filed like on your A0100.

CollectorSoul 22/04/2012 11h04

Hello again,

I made it. I extracted both (J and PAL) AFS containers and edited the PAL subtitle file. Then I moved the Japanese voice files in the PAL folder and rebuilt the AFS (and later the IDX) again. I tested the sequence and the voice is Japanese and the subtitles do appear!

EDIT: The guide is completed too. It only has to be reviewed and approved (by Hiei-?) and then it should be uploaded to the Shentrad site.

CollectorSoul 23/04/2012 18h05

Dear Shenmue Community,

After about 6 months of research, investigation and knowledge collection I completed my "Shenmue 1 Japanization Guide" last weekend. I made this guide because there was no Shenmue 1 ******* section on the Shentrad Team homepage and because I was interested in a Shenmue with Japanese voices and English subtitles and text.

The guide features all knowledge you need to upgrade your Shenmue PAL to NTSC-J without losing the English text. I learned a lot of stuff about Shenmue when I worked on this and maybe it will be usefull for you too.

I would like to say thank you to the following people (without them this guide would not exist today):
Shentrad Team [coders of the modification tools]
Hiei- [author of the original guide which I used as template]
IlDucci [helped me a lot with AFS Utils (XML files), FREE0x and A0100, AFS container list]
Wude [teached me the vending machine file swapping]
Master Kyodai [provider of the useful disc scene list]
Mestre Ziming [provider of the useful character ID list]

Edit3: updated to version 0.8.3 (added IlDucci's complete AFS container list, some vending machine stuff and changed some stuff in chapter 7.2.2)

Edit 4:
Hello again Shenmue community.
I have been inactive for some time but winter is approaching again and soon it will be Shenmue time again.
I noticed that Kogami from the metagames forum managed to fix us a Shenmue version with Japanese Audio and English subtitles.
I am very thankful about that and so the translation guide might not be necessary for Japanese audio related stuff anymore.

I also noticed that the previous link to the translation guide is dead and I decided to reupload it.
If anyone wants to use it for another translation into his/her language the guide might still be useful.
The second link is the raw word document. Someone on Metagames forum once asked me for it and I couldn't find it.

Great job, allow me to give you some additional help: You placed a partial list of the contents of each AFS, each disc. I'll give you the entire list, separated by discs (Although, as I've found, the best thing to do is to make a pool with all the AFS because they are shared, though two AFS from disc 4 that have identical names as with the rest of the game, ARE different. Careful!)

Sorry for the English, I translated these from my Spanish notes in a rush.

I also reccomend you to order the Character code names (XXXX) by their alphabetic order of those codes, as this will be more useful for someone who is editing HUMANS than anything else.

Hey guys,

I updated the guide to 0.8.1 (added complete AFS list [shorted comments to fit 1 line]).

EDIT: Updated to 0.8.2 (added some vending machine texture stuff to chapter 9.2.2)
EDIT: Updated to 0.8.3 (remade the export srf to xml section) previous links are dead now

Hi there,

Long time no see he? :)

It's difficult for me to work on this project, but don't worry I don't give up. We haven't dead line right? :D

I just checked your guide, CollectorSoul, and it's really an impressive work. Good job. You know Shenmue better than me now!
Do you want to write the 'how to' page on the ShenTrad Website, or do more? Maybe? :)
I'm sorry, I never answered to your e-mail, I marked it important in my Outlook but I never take the time to check your problem. I'm truly sorry...

I'm glad to see that the project is living after ~6 years for now... It's really amazing :)

For the Shentrad tools, I have a lot of work to do. With IlDucci we identify new MAPINFO.BIN files with special subtitles, like the 'NBIK' sequence. Hugh.

We have to work on the 1ST_READ.BIN and Default.xbe hacker too. Ayla lost his source, but I have it on the SVN. Long road for this tool because it's very hard to do and it requires a lot of test.

I'm just on reflexion for migrating the source code from Delphi 2007 (the lastest ANSI release) to the newer Delphi XE2 (lastest release) because I have the opportunity to get the Delphi XE2 software. But I don't know if it's possible because this release is Unicode (yeah, japaneses characters will be properly decoded on the UI) and x86/x64 arch. So i don't think the migration is just opening the project in the newer delphi and compile it.

More news later :D

Don't thank me, thank Wude, Ducci, Hiei etc. I just collected and centralized the knowledge that already existed.

Not necessary, just make a link to the guide and let them download the PDF.
You can make mirrors to other hosters if you want. I took this hoster because it is quite unknown compared to the other giants..

EDIT: Well my guide is actually about inserting the J voice and then translating, not only translating a PAL to any other language. Inserting J voice is only optional. Hmmmmm

And I thought you got involved with this HADOPI stuff they introduced in France because you mentionned problems with your ISP ^^
And the other idea was that my adress got on a blacklist.

Maybe I can help write the S1 How to, if you want. But be warned: I'll need some English corrector.

It's not very difficult, but it requires time to sort the extracted strings, and to test. And I don't have any practical way to test the patched binaries. I don't even have a dreamcast here.

Hello Zhao,

You can do with it whatever you want.

Sunmingzhao 12/05/2012 11h47

Hi CollectorSoul,

Thank you for your answer. I will begin soon a translation.

So, I can copy-paste all your work in a Word document and then I translate it.
Don't you have a Word-based document ?

I think you had to create your document with some office programm, don't you ?
Otherwise, it is not a problem for me if you can't send me a such file.

CollectorSoul 18/05/2012 19h24

Hello Zhao

I'm not sure if I still have the word document. I used MS Office to make this (like you suggested).

Sunmingzhao 18/05/2012 19h39

OK, no problem.
I think I will begin the french translation of your document very soon.

One more time, I have to admit that it is very very complete and so usefull.
Your work on it has to be congratulated :)

I'm here to announce that today, SegaSaturno.com and Traducciones del Tío Víctor have released the first version of the Spanish patch for Shenmue I.

The patch translates almost everything, plus it dubs two cutscenes, the starting Prophecy and the departure from Amihama.

We're also using a different system for releasing the translation, with a patcher that weighs only 25MB.

Here's the final trailer:

Hello everyone,

I'm quite impressed by this Spanish version. As you may know my wish is to have a J-Dub Eng-sub version of Shenmue 1 (like Shenmue 2 PAL).
Are there any others who would like that version too? Would you participate in a translation project?

@Sizious
As you are the boss if it gets to the tools I'd like to ask you this:
Is it possible to implement a feature in the subtitle editor which would export the subtitles only? I mean, if I export a subtitle file to XML format i get such a thing like this:

<subtitle charid="AKIR">The wrong one=@</subtitle>
<subtitle charid="AKIR">I want to know about the cartel</subtitle>
<subtitle charid="AKIR">That's none of your business.¡õJust tell me!

and I would like to have something like this:

"AKIR">The wrong one=@
"AKIR">I want to know about the cartel.
"AKIR">That's none of your business.¡õJust tell me!

Such a feature could speed up a possible translation project

You want to easily export the subtitles to a Google Translate page?

CollectorSoul 25/06/2012 16h39

@IlDucci

Yes, it is annoying to copy paste each line seperately into google translator
so this could be a help.

IlDucci 25/06/2012 16h50

You'd take less time if you made a tool that parses the XML files. Sizious' a busy man, and anyone with a minimum level of coding could do it.

hello everyone!
i'm trying to translate some lines from shenmue 2 jap to english with the cinematics tool, but when i finish translating i get an error message "lecture au dela de la fin du fichier"

Well, when you unpack a AFS that only releases "file_X" in Shenmue, that's because you're using a release that has modified the audio files, rendering them useless for translation.

wude 13/07/2012 23h54

i'm using a clean dump and the original afs files are fine
the cinematinc editor 1.4a was the problem, btw do you know where the fighting sfx are stored

i'm using a clean dump and the original afs files are fine
the cinematinc editor 1.4a was the problem, btw do you know where the fighting sfx are stored

Thought they were not on the AFS, rather on the SND (DTPK) files. Check for a BATTLE(Don't know the rest of the name) file.
